Michael J. McGirney is the founding and Managing Partner of the Firm's Tampa Office. He is an AV Rated Attorney by Martindale Hubbell who concentrates his practice on defending professionals and representing insurance companies in bad faith and coverage litigation. He has represented over 600 professionals in litigation in Florida since 1990.
He is a 1978 graduate of Lasalle University in Philadelphia, where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree with a dual majors in Business Administration and Psychology. He obtained his Juris Doctor in 1990 from the John Marshall Law School in Chicago.
Prior to engaging in the practice of law, Mr. McGirney spent 12 years in various technical and supervisory claim positions for a number of insurance carriers. He has extensive claims experience in personal and commercial lines, excess, surplus and specialty lines and professional liability and excess professional liability lines of insurance. Prior to graduating law school, he helped form a third-party administrator that handled claims and litigation for captive legal malpractice programs and self-insureds.
He also served a three-year term on the Hillsborough County 13 D Grievance Committee of the Florida Bar.
He is frequently consulted on ethics matters and lectures on professional and general liability matters. He has provided seminars to various insurance companies in matters of professional and general liability defense issues and claim training issues. He is certified by the State of Florida in Mediator Ethics and he has served as an instructor on mediator ethics and liability in mediator training programs held at the University of South Florida and other organizations. He has also served as a guest lecturer at Stetson Law School, University of Florida Law School and University of Miami Law School.
He concentrates his practice in complex litigation with an emphasis on the defense of professionals, including accountants, actuaries, attorneys, appraisers, architects, broker-dealers, directors, and officers, engineers, fiduciaries, financial institutions, home inspectors, insurance companies and agents, mediators, public officials, real estate agents, school boards and community colleges, third party and claims administrators, title agents and title companies.
Mr. McGirney also has represented insurance companies in coverage matters and in bad faith litigation. He is involved in the defense of class action, mass tort and multi-district litigation. He has experience in monitoring complex matters for excess insurance companies as well as providing insurance coverage evaluations, insurance policy drafting and insurance company audits.
