Michael J. Shuman was born in Ohio and growing up in a small suburb outside of Chicago. Mr. Shuman earned his Bachelor of Arts in History from Tulane University in 2001 and, in 2005, earned his Juris Doctor, graduating cum laude, from the University of Miami.
During law school, Mr. Shuman worked as a law clerk gaining experience in the areas of commercial and corporate litigation; he also served as a certified legal intern for the State Attorney’s Office 17th Judicial Circuit. In 2005, following graduation from law school, Mr. Shuman was admitted to the Florida Bar and, in 2006, he was admitted to practice in the United States District Court, Southern District of Florida.
Mr. Shuman’s practice focuses on complex commercial business litigation in federal court. His representative experience ranges from counseling national and international clients including financial institutions, commercial and residential real estate developers, and medical laboratory testing companies, banking software companies to local clients including historic landmark hotels, investment groups, chapter 11 creditors, chapter 7 trustees, design architects, contractors, and small business owners. Mr. Shuman’s varied practice includes advocacy in complex commercial business litigation, intellectual property litigation, bankruptcy restructuring litigation, contract negotiation, and general business and development stratagem.
Mr. Shuman was part of the litigation and restructure team that represented the Fontainebleau Hotel in its resolution of over 65 complex contractor lawsuits and facilitatied the restructure $850 million of debt to avoid bankruptcy. In the class-action setting, Mr. Shuman also worked with the litigation team representing a client class spanning 38 states in a contract-based class action against Exxon Corporation resulting in $1 billion recovery for the class.
Mr. Shuman has also dedicated his time and skill to providing pro bono legal service through projects such as the “German Ghetto Work Reparations Program” representing Holocaust survivors in their effort to recover reparations against the German Government. Mr. Shuman has also participated in Miami’s “Put Something Back” program assisting applicants otherwise without the means to retain counsell.
